Right now I'm working my way through the Culture novels by Iain M. Banks. So far I've read Consider Phlebas, Player of Games, Use of Weapons, The State of the Art and I'm just starting Against a Dark Background.
I have to say, they're all amazing. I love Banks' writing style although sometimes it can be little confusing. The plots of all the books are really clever and really insightful. Although set hundreds of years in the future, present day comparisons and be drawn in respect to economy, environment, government and military. The fact that some sort of big plot twist or revelation occurs near the end of each story gives me an immense feeling of satisfaction when I finish them. Although I also feel sad that I've come to the end of an amazing story. Anyone else read these books? What's your opinion?

Never heard of it, what's the general story of it? I can see it's sci-fi from your description, but other than that it's vague to me
.And for the record, I haven't done as much reading as I would've liked to. Not enough free time, and the stuff I do have I waste on the innernets and stuff . |

Sorry, for those of you not familiar with them. It's a collection of novels all centered around a Utopian civilization called the Culture who have managed to abolish money, disease and pretty much every other bad aspect of today's society.
Most of the stories generally deal with the Culture coming into contact with new civilizations or 'Intercepting' other ones that are about to blow themselves up or start a war or whatever. I'm not very good at synopsis, you'd be better of reading the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Culture

Good books. Feersum Injun is horrible to try and read. A decent portion of the book is written as the diary of an illiterate person.

My mate said Excession is ridiculously hard to read because there's just pages and pages of eroneous conversation between Minds.

Hmm, haven't read that one. I've only really read the ones that Dad has on the shelf downstairs, which isn't too many of them.
